In this first chapter in this book, Dr. K. C. Hanson and Dr. Douglas E. Oakman explain the new method in interpreting the Bible, especially the Gospel, that is social-sciences method. This method emphasizes the research of the social structures and social conflicts in the Bible. By applying this methodology, these authors lead us to understand all situations in Palestine when Jesus lived: all about family (kinship), politics, political economy, and political religion. Those situations are explained well and clearly by using diagrams, tabels, pictures, etc. These explanations enrich and lead us to understand the background of Palestine when we read the Gospel, so that we can understand the real context of the live of Jesus in Palestine and apply it into our context in daily life.

Prof. K. C. Hanson, Ph.D. is an Editor-in-Chief in Wipf and Stock Publishers
Eugene, Oregon (since 2005). He earned Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Religious Studies from Pacific Christian College, Fullerton, California; Master of Arts (M.A.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Religion: Old Testament and Ancient Near Eastern Studies from The Claremont Graduate School, Claremont, California, U.S.A. He has taught biblical studies at Episcopal Theological School and the School of Theology at Claremont, Creighton University, and St. Olaf College. He is members of:

* The American Academy of Religion

Prof. Douglas E. Oakman, Ph.D. is professor of New Testament at Pacific Lutheran University. He earned B.A. from University of Iowa; Master of Divinity (M.Div.) from Chist Seminary-Seminex; and Ph.D. from Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley. Oakman has published numerous articles applying the social sciences to biblical studies, is the author of Jesus and the Economic Questions of His Day (Edwin Mellen, 1986), with K. C. Hanson the award-winning Palestine in the Time of Jesus (Fortress Press, second edition 2008), Jesus and the Peasants (Cascade Books, 2008), and The Political Aims of Jesus (Fortress Press, 2012). During the 1990s, he participated in archaeological excavations at Jotapata and Cana in Galilee.
